ZBLAN (ZrF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF) glass fibers are excellent materials for the use in many applications, such as fiber optics, fiber amplifiers, and lasers for cutting, drilling, and surgery. The main advantage of ZBLAN glasses over other glasses, such as silica, is its superior infrared transmissibility. The theoretical optical transmission spectrum for a ZBLAN fiber is from 0.3 μm in the UV to 7 μm in the IR region. The main obstacle with ZBLAN glass is the extrinsic losses from impurities, which includes crystallites formed during the manufacturing process. Due to ZBLAN’s narrow working range, crystallites easily form during the drawing process, which inhibits the materials transmissibility. Microgravity (μ-g) processing has been proven to suppress crystallization in ZBLAN glass, thus allowing the material to reach its theoretical loss coefficient. Past researchers have shown that this phenomenon exists, but the mechanism of crystallization suppression in a microgravity environment is not well understood. This research endeavors to understand the role that gravity plays on the crystallization suppression of ZBLAN glass. The outcome of this study will impact the production of superior mid-IR fiber optics and could lead to a more feasible manufacturing technique. The main conclusion developed from this study is that the process is heavily dependent upon mass transfer kinetics such as diffusion and buoyancy-driven convection. Thus, suppressing buoyancy-driven convection, at relevant drawing temperatures, suppresses crystallization growth in ZBLAN glass. This theory was proven through microgravity experimentation, analytical, and computational modeling.  相似文献

The European Union has yet to determine how exactly to reach its greenhouse gas emissions targets for the future. One potential answer involves large-scale development of concentrated solar power (CSP) in the North African region, transmitting the power to Europe. CSP is a relatively young and little utilized technology and is expensive when compared to other methods of generation. Feasibility studies have shown it is possible to generate enough power from CSP plants in Africa to spearhead the EUs climate goals. However, the costs of such a project are less well known. Currently, CSP must compete with low cost coal-fired electricity plants, severely hindering development. We examine the possible investment costs required for North African CSP levelized electricity cost to equal those of coal-fired plants and the potential subsidy costs needed to encourage growth until the technologies reach price parity. We also examine the sensitivity of investment and subsidies to changes in key factors. We find that estimates of subsidy amounts are reasonable for the EU and that sensitivity to such factors as perceived risk and learning rates would enable policy-makers to positively influence the cost of subsidies and time required for CSP to be competitive with coal.  相似文献

Oxidative stress has been directly implicated in hypertension and myocardial remodelling, two pathologies fundamental to the development of chronic heart failure. Selenium (Se) can act directly and indirectly as an antioxidant and a lowered Se status leads to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. This study examined the role of Se on the development of hypertension and subsequent progression to chronic heart failure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Three dietary groups were studied: (i) Se‐free; (ii) normal Se (50 μg Se/kg food); and (iii) high Se (1000 μg Se/kg food). Systolic blood pressure and echocardiography were used to detect cardiac changes in vivo. At study end, cardiac tissues were assayed for glutathione peroxidase activity, thioredoxin reductase activity, and protein carbonyls. The major finding of this study was the high heart failure‐related mortality rate in SHRs fed an Se‐free diet (70%). Normal and high levels of dietary Se resulted in higher survival rates of 78 and 100%, respectively. Furthermore, high dietary Se was clearly associated with lower levels of cardiac oxidative damage and increased antioxidant expression, as well as a reduction in disease severity and mortality in the SHR.  相似文献

Phytosterols and phytostanols (PAP) compete with cholesterol absorption in the intestine, resulting in a 5–15%-reduction in plasma total and LDL cholesterol. An important issue is the PAP potential to reduce the plasma concentrations of fat-soluble vitamins and provitamin A carotenoids. Here, an update of the scientific evidence is reviewed to evaluate plant PAP-enriched foods impact on plasma fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoid levels, and to discuss potential implications in terms of cardiovascular risk. Based on 49 human interventional and 3 bioavailability studies, results showed that regular consumption, particularly over the long term, of foods fortified with PAP as recommended in labeling does not significantly impact plasma vitamins A, D, and K concentration. A 10% significant median reduction was observed for α-tocopherol. Concerning carotenoids, while 13 studies did not demonstrate statistically significant plasma β-carotene reduction, 20 studies showed significant reductions, with median effect size of ?24%. This decline can be mitigated or offset by increased fruits and vegetables consumption. Furthermore, higher cardiovascular risk was observed for differences in plasma β-carotene concentration of the same magnitude as the estimated average decrease by PAP consumption. These results are supported by the only study of β-carotene bioavailability showing decrease in absorption by phytosterols daily intake.  相似文献

The heterocoupling between 2-nitrobenzoic and 2,6-dimethoxybenzoic acids was studied. It was demonstrated that the [PdCl2/Cu(OH)2:0.2/0.75 equiv.] catalytic system can catalyze this reaction with significant yield. Further optimizations (i.e.: sources and loadings of copper and palladium salts, base) allowed to isolate the biaryl in 70 % yield. A catalytic cycle that accounts for the observed results is proposed. While the bi-metal catalyst has shown high yields with some substrates, it is only able to catalyze the decarboxylative coupling in high yield for some of the substrates studied.  相似文献

Abstract

The desire to teach in a way that acknowledges our position in the world as global citizens faces several challenges, many of which are global in nature. We identify three of these. First, there is the split between “modern” and “traditional” that can be found in a wide range of institutional and historical practices the world over. Second, there is the problem of language which has embedded within it certain historical presumptions. Third, there is the hesitancy in studio teaching to address issues that allow students to see themselves as actors in global history. This paper describes an analytical approach to modeling near-field plates, which are non-periodic grating-like structures that can focus electromagnetic waves to subwavelength dimensions. The analysis provides additional insight into the operation and design of such plates that focus cylindrical waves to subwavelength resolutions. Explicit expressions for the current density induced on the plate and its impedance profile are derived. The analytical expressions are validated numerically.  相似文献

We report operational and environmental stability of solution-processed organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) using the small molecule organic semiconductor 6,13-bis(triisopropyl-silylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pentacene). Typical drop-cast TIPS-pentacene OTFTs show strong molecular ordering and relatively stable characteristics with air and illumination compared to vapor-deposited pentacene OTFTs. For short channel length devices, TIPS-pentacene OTFTs undergo significant degradation with bias-stress, possibly due to operation at large drive currents and large local power dissipation as well as built-in charges in the channel area.  相似文献
